Tragic Outcome for Rescued Rabbits in Seletar

In a heartbreaking incident in Seletar, Singapore, a recent rescue operation aimed at saving a group of abandoned rabbits faced an unfortunate turn of events. Despite the dedicated efforts of animal welfare organization Voices For Animals (VFA), all seven baby rabbits, known as kits, have died following their rescue.

On September 18, VFA was alerted to a case involving many rabbits seen wandering around Seletar Farmway 1. The organization quickly mobilized its team to investigate and assist. Upon arrival, they discovered that some rabbits were hiding in boxes believed to have been used for their abandonment.

The rescue resulted in a total of 23 rabbits being brought to safety, including 16 adults and the seven vulnerable kits. Unfortunately, the health conditions of the kits were severe from the start. Despite receiving warmth and medical care post-rescue, their condition worsened over time.

Derrick Tan, president of VFA, reported that the team lost kits gradually every day until none survived. The adult rabbits fared better; however, one female rabbit gave birth during evaluation but tragically lost two newborns shortly after delivery.

Health Concerns Identified

Initial assessments revealed that many of the rescued rabbits suffered from various health issues such as overgrown nails and skin problems. Some had visible wounds as well. The Animal Veterinary Service (AVS) and veterinary professionals from The Animal Doctors (TAD) conducted thorough examinations on September 21 to identify these conditions and initiate appropriate treatments.

Plans for Re-homing Adult Rabbits

While the fate of the baby rabbits was tragic, there remain plans to re-home the 17 surviving adult rabbits under VFA’s care. These animals will be carefully placed into homes where future owners understand their long-term responsibilities as pet caregivers.

VFA intends to collaborate closely with other local animal welfare organizations like Bunny Wonderland and House Rabbit Society Singapore throughout this process. Their aim is not just rapid placement but ensuring that these animals find suitable forever homes with families committed to their lifelong care.

The Importance of Responsible Pet Ownership

This incident highlights a critical message regarding pet ownership responsibilities. Tan emphasized that abandonment is never an acceptable solution when facing challenges related to pet care or ownership commitments. Prospective pet owners should thoroughly consider their ability to provide proper care before bringing small animals like rabbits into their homes.

The Role of Authorities

The National Parks Board (NParks) has also voiced its commitment against cases involving animal abandonment or cruelty. They emphasized that suitable enforcement actions will be taken against individuals found responsible for such acts in accordance with existing laws regarding animal welfare.
